Years ago, I read a very thought-provoking book called The Welkening by Gregory Spencer. Several kids have an adventure in an alternative universe, and in the process find out who they really are. They come out changed, but not all for the better. The part that really stayed with me all this time was the reaction of several characters to one of their companions, who had turned into something heretofore unimaginable. And their leader, observing their shock and horror, simply said, “He became what he was becoming.”
How can that relate to real life today? Does it mean that we have no choice in our final destination? Or does it mean that once a person fully commits to a course of action that the end of the road he has taken is somewhat predictable?
